How could a believer, a true child of God, be ashamed before the Lord when he comes (see 1 John 2:28)?

This text is from a letter written by David Gooding in 1999.

When a believer stands before the judgment seat of Christ and sees all their work burned up, according to 1 Corinthians 3:15 they themselves shall be saved, because salvation does not depend upon works.

But will they find themselves saying, 'Hurrah! It doesn't matter anyway! I don't mind!'?

Will they not feel ashamed when the Lord has to point out to them how shoddy their work was?

Ever yours in Christ,
