In Ephesians 3:15, what does Paul mean by ‘every family in heaven’?

This text is from a letter written by David Gooding in 1994.

The phrase 'from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named' suggests to me that there are different kinds of family.

Even on earth we use the term 'family' to refer to father, mother and children. In other circumstances we can refer to a family of nations. And in the study of the manuscripts of the Bible, for example, we often refer to families of manuscripts.

Could it be that, among the high angels in heaven, some of them are grouped, not by physical descent but by other common features, and that these groups are referred to as families in a metaphorical sense?

Yours very sincerely,
