The Apostle John had seen the Lord with his own eyes and had actually touched him. John now writes to all who believe in the Lord Jesus to assure them, not only that they have eternal life, but that they too may have fellowship with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ. He shows us how to remain in the enjoyment of it: ‘If we walk in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ, God’s Son, cleanses us from all sin.’ John also assures us that all who have trusted the Lord Jesus belong to the family of God. The world, of course is in great opposition to God and his people. In all its attractiveness and its seductiveness, it will try to steal our hearts away from the Father. But John gives us the secret to overcoming the world: ‘And now, little children, abide in him, so that when he appears we may have confidence and not shrink from him in shame at his coming.’
